IRS 1040 Tax Form Instructions for 2013

Filling out the 1040 tax form is fairly easy once you have all necessary documents together. It is important to understand the difference between the tax forms. 1040A and 1040EZ are the short forms. 1040 is the long form and is used for people who want to itemize deductions. Find all 3 tax forms here.

The very first thing you should do when filling out your tax form is to enter any identifying information at the top. This includes your social security number, name, address, spouse’s information, and marital status.  You should enter the field asking for amount of exemptions. This is the number of people you can claim on your return. You would claim children and spouse if you are married.

The next step is to report your income. This is any taxable income within the past year. Your employer is required to send you a W-2 containing all pertinent information including income, employer tax ID, address, and taxes paid.

Once you have all of this entered, you must adjust it to reflect what is taxable. Report everything that you have paid for this year including educational expenses and student loan interest.  You may either itemize or take a standard deduction so calculate both ways to see which number is bigger.

Enter any tax payments you have made. If you have paid more taxes than you owe, you will get a refund. If you haven’t paid enough, you will owe the government.
